CI-5525 Product of Learning

Course Description

The main purpose of this course is to provide assistance and guidance to candidates as they prepare their Product of Learning for degrees offered in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction including the Master of Arts in Curriculum Specialist, Elementary Education, and Middle Grades Education.

The Product of Learning is intended as a culminating experience and will serve both to encapsulate the accumulated programmatic reflections developed by the student over time and to demonstrate to the profession the increased knowledge and competencies that have been acquired from the program of study.

Major Components of the Product of Learning

  • Professional Information
    (Curriculum vitae, accomplishments, awards, etc. are appropriate artifacts for this introductory section.)
  • Learner
    (Learners may refer to public school students or adult learners such as teachers, administrators, etc.)
  • Curriculum
    (Artifacts that support knowledge of local, state, and national curricular influences, theory, development, assessment, etc. are appropriate for this section.)
  • Content Knowledge
    (Content knowledge may include a teaching field, knowledge of curriculum at the local, state, and national levels, federal legislation, state mandates, implications for classroom teachers, etc.)
  • Instruction
    (Instruction may include documentation of classroom-based activities with student/learner work samples and/or training programs with adult learners such as teachers, administrators, etc.)
  • Schooling
    (Schooling may include organizational patterns, philosophy, trends and issues, etc. The planning, implementation, and assessment of curriculum in various levels and types of schools may be appropriate in this section as it relates to students and educators within the context of schools.)
  • Leadership
    (Leadership should include examples of participation in professional development, leadership in organizations, internship accomplishments, etc.)
  • Working Successfully with Family and Community Members
    (Documented success at working with stakeholders outside the classroom is appropriate for this section.)
  • Research
    (Action research projects, examples of use of research base in professional practice, etc. should be included here.)
  • Assessment
    (Artifacts should attest to the curriculum specialists' knowledge of curriculum assessment and implications for practitioners and educational leaders.)
  • Reflection
    (This section should include reflection on the portfolio and the total degree program.)

First Hour Students

The major purpose of the first hour of CI-5525 Product of Learning is to assist candidates as they begin to create portfolios. Specific assignments are listed below.

  • Create an organizational plan for the portfolio and present this plan to the instructor and class. Details of the assignment will be discussed in the first class meeting. Due dates will be determined.
  • Create a PowerPoint presentation that includes an organizational plan and examples of artifacts, rationale statements, and reflections from assignments completed in two different courses. The due date for this assignment will be determined by the instructor. This presentation should demonstrate that candidates have a plan to organize documentation from courses and experiences completed as well as a valid plan for adding to the portfolio while completing remaining degree requirements. Details will be discussed in class.

Second Hour Students

The major purpose of the second hour of CI-5525 Product of Learning is to assist candidates as they continue to develop their portfolios. Specific assignments are listed below.

  • Continue to add artifacts and reflections to the organizational plan for your portfolio that was devised in the first hour of this course. Submit a list of courses that have been taken and the types of artifacts that represent your acquired professional knowledge. The due date for this assignment will be determined according to your assigned group and by the instructor.
  • Update the PowerPoint presentation that was prepared in the first hour of this course. Six of the Major Components for the Product of Learning should be completed in this course. The due date for this assignment will be determined by the instructor. This presentation should demonstrate progress on the portfolio as well as a plan for preparing the final Product of Learning while completing remaining degree requirements. Details will be discussed in class.

Third Hour Students

The major purpose of the third and final hour of CI-5525 Product of Learning is to assist students as they complete their portfolios. Specific assignments are as follows.

  • Continue to add artifacts and reflections to the organizational plan for your portfolio. Submit a timeline for completion of this portfolio to the instructor during the first class meeting.
  • Complete the portfolio and PowerPoint presentation which should reflect all of the Major Components of the Portfolio required for advanced masters degree candidates. Schedule a class meeting date to submit the portfolio and to present two of the standards using multi-media.
  • Make an appointment with your advisor to present this Product of Learning to a group of professionals upon completing course requirements. Remember that this presentation is a graduation requirement.

Evaluation

This class is graded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis. Candidates must demonstrate that they have successfully initiated, continued, or completed their portfolios for the Product of Learning. Class attendance and participation are required.

Students are expected to follow the Academic Code of Integrity at all times. Violations will result in a failing grade and/or expulsion from the university.
